CBC2020 course program  is designed to provide 40 hours of training including, lectures, case study/problem-based learning (PBL), student’s presentations, seminars/tutorials, practical training, etc. The 40-hours training scheme is adopted in case of face-to-face training. Online live training may actually require more time, to facilitate interaction and training outcomes.

The program is designed around the “working document on the development of a common education and training framework to fulfill the requirements under the Directive 2010/63/EU”, and includes:
Core Modules:
Function Specific (Prerequisite) Modules:

  • Function A: “carrying out procedures on animals”
  • Function C: “person taking care of animals”
  • Function D: “person killing animals”

The full list of Modules and Learning Outcomes included in the course is available here.
Cephalopod Biology and Care Course includes cephalopod species-specific training encompassing information useful to qualified veterinarians and technicians, people required to handle cephalopods including capture from the wild, especially in light of the Directive and its transposition in Member States. The course covers also non-invasive or minimally invasive approaches as applied to cephalopods, and management and assessment of Cephalopod Welfare including establishment and monitoring of their physiological and behavioral needs.

Trainees of the CBC Training Program courses have to pass an individual assessment; this will allow to receive a CBC FELASA certificate.

The individual assessment is based on learning outcomes in compliance with the above mentioned requirements. Students that not pass the final examination session will be allowed to attend an Exam Retake session organized no later than two months from the end of the course.

How CBC2020 will run: ‘theory’

  1. Teaching is delivered on-line, assuring virtual simultaneous presence of the Member of the Faculty, and at least a Tutor of the CBC Core Team and the Trainees.
  2. Each lecture/session in our program will be delivered into 1/3 consecutive days, depending on the original duration and a specific Q&A session and summary session will be added during the entire training program.

As in Virtual teaching experience we will use White/Black-Board platforms to facilitate interaction, guidance and Q&A.

  1. IT-Tools will be adopted to warrant adequate levels of individual attention, participation and interaction.
  2. Training material (i.e. presentations delivered) will be available through the CBC SharePoint.
  3. We expect training will last at least 4 weeks, instead of the usual about 4 days.

At the end of the ‘theory’ phase, Trainees will be assessed preliminary with online examination.

Practical Training (Demo and Hands-on) and OSPE assessment for practical skills (LOs) will be carried out in physical presence (face-to-face); due to COVID-19 pandemics this will be arranged to warrant social distance and all required precautions.

As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, CephRes and the CBC Training Program Core Team decided to continue its commitment in Training and Education of the Scientific Community and adopting a virtual training experience. This is aimed to limit moving people around countries, and any possible difficulties may emerge considering the different nationalities involved. Care for All Trainees and Trainers is our foremost priority

The CBC2020 FELASA accredited Course (CBC2020 ‘Virtual’ Training) aims to meet your needs and expectations in this challenging time and will offer the same cutting edge scientific and specialist training program including lectures, seminars, interactive experience, Questions&Answers as planned originally.

Accessible from all over the world to registered Trainees, CBC Virtual Training represents an exciting alternative to the regular ‘physical’ face-to-face training format. Professionally implemented online, we will adopt the cutting-edge web-based technology to facilitate your training and promote interaction between Trainees and the Faculty (CephRes adopted CISCO Webex Suite and BlackBoard Collaborate – the systems will be further implemented in CephRes website in the future, for improving continuing support and training experience).

Practical hands-on sessions and final assessment (OSPE) is scheduled to occur “in person” (July 28-29, 2021) at:

Department of Biology – University of Fribourg
Zoology, Chemin du Musee 10
